Analyses of existing products

The codes and conventions of this magazine cover follows the way this type of magazine communicates with its audience and also the manner in which it does. It follows the pattern of having the cover star being either a band or a solo artist  who take up the majority of the page. Also the masthead is in the top left corner of the cover and there is a bar code in the bottom right corner also there are secondary articles running across the bottom of the page and the headline overlaps the feature article photograph. The masthead is in block capital letter that are written in white and is on a red background in order to make it stand out more on the front cover.

Having the band stand on a street where there are other people gives the impression that the article on the band isn't going to be formal also it shows the band may not be a band who want to let people know that they may be a band for the people and show this by being around 'normal' people. Furthermore, the picture of the band is the only photo used on the front cover this has been used to make the band more prominent on the cover and to show that they are the main band the contents of the magazine will talk about. The photograph of the band is in black and white and has connotations of that it is a old photo however it is a rather new photo, this may have been done in order to make the headline stand out more which is in orange and red. The colours red and orange represent danger and explosive so they have been used to show that the music of The Strokes is  Also the text under the headline is rather informal and chatty which follows the style of the majority of the magazine. The clothing band are wearing is informal and could be described as scruffy although this is what bands like The Strokes would wear at the time when the first come to fame in the early 2000's.

The mode of address for this is informal and rather chatty so people will find it more enjoyable to read, the magazine reaches out to people who are a fan of indie music although it may also interest people who are a fan of music.

The demographic audience of this particular issue of NME will be people aged 16-30 of both genders and the psychographic audience will be people who are interested in music but especially indie music.

Q is a music magazine like NME however, with this magazine the rapper Kanye West is the cover star meaning that the contents is going to be very different as the cover star for the NME cover was the indie band The Strokes. This magazine follows many codes and conventions that a typical music magazine does with feature article photograph being in the middle of the page also the masthead is in the top right corner however, this magazine does not have a barcode or how much the magazine costs us on the front cover. There are secondary articles all over the front page which follows the codes and conventions of this magazine, furthermore, the name of the magazine is written in white and has been put on to a red background in order to make it look more prominent on the cover so that it catches peoples attention and draws them to the magazine.

The feature article photograph is of the rapper Kanye West who is stood in the middle of the page dressed in black and is on a white background which really makes him stand out. This may have been done to catch peoples attention and try and make them buy the magazine as Kanye West is a massively well known artist by people from all over the world. Kanye is stood with his hands by his side holding a microphone and his looking at the camera with his head slightly slanted with a stern look on his face. He is seen as a cocky and arrogant person by many people and the way he is stood possibly shows that it is true and he knows he is cocky and arrogant and may even try to keep up this image.  The headline says 'KANYE AN AUDIENCE WITH THE ULTIMATE ANTI-HERO'  he is being described as someone who is the opposite of a hero as they have hero attributes and they word 'ultimate' suggest he is the best or the biggest 'anti-hero' in the music industry.

The mode of address for this front cover is quite formal and you could make assumptions that the interview with Kanye is going to be rather serious as it maybe be talking to him why some people don't really like him, this would interest both people who dislike him.

The demographic audience of this particular issue of NME will be people aged 16-25 of both genders and the psychographic audience will be people who are interested in music but especially rap music.

Initial Ideas

My initial idea for my coursework will be to do a printed image of a music magazine.  I have decided to do this because i have a passion for music and i feel as though it would be something i will be able to analyse well and will be able to make a good piece of practical work on.

My magazine is going to follow the style of these two famous music magazines as i find both magazines interesting and inspire me to design my own magazine cover.
